Supporting you when you need it in a way that works for you

Supporting Lives, Connecting People

The way we support people with social care needs and their family and friend carers is based on the principles of our Adult Social Care Vision and Strategy 2019-21.

We support people to be as independent as possible and enable them to have choice and control over the way they live their lives and the support they receive.

Supporting Lives, Connecting People is our term for the community-led support approach which we use to deliver adult social care in West Sussex. It is grounded in strong partnership working with our NHS and voluntary and community sector partners.

This approach has a strong emphasis on reaching people at an early stage to help prevent or delay the development of their care and support needs. It focuses on people’s strengths and capabilities and looks to find local community solutions to meeting their social care needs wherever possible. Bureaucracy is kept to a minimum which benefits both people needing support and our staff.

‘Talk Local’ sessions have played a central part in the delivery of community-led support in West Sussex. These have been held in local community venues to provide people with an opportunity to speak face-to-face with a member of the Adults’ Services team about what is important to them and to discuss the support they need.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the ‘Talk Local’ sessions were put on hold and we have been using a range of other approaches which don’t involve face-to-face contact. We are now using feedback from people who have experienced these different approaches and from our staff about what has worked well for them to help us decide the best approach for the future.
