Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)

A legal document whereby a person can appoint one or more people to make decisions on their behalf, should they lose capacity in the future (for example if they have been involved in an accident or become ill). The person must be over 18 years and have capacity at the time of choosing who they have as their attorney.

There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney:

  • health and welfare
  • property and financial affairs

There is a cost attached to this document. Please contact the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) if you are considering making a Lasting Power of Attorney.
